Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was sworn in for a second five-year term on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, following a disputed presidential election.

Hichilema was declared the winner of the August 13th, 2026 presidential election with about 60 per cent of the vote, while his main challenger, Brian Mundubile, received approximately 38 percent.

The inauguration took place as Mundubile remained in detention after being arrested and charged with treason. His running mate, Makebi Zulu, was also taken into custody in connection with the investigation.

Mundubile had disputed the election outcome and spent more than two weeks in hiding before surrendering to police in Lusaka on Thursday, August 27th. Authorities accuse the opposition of involvement in an alleged armed uprising, allegations that Mundubile and his supporters have rejected.

The opposition’s ability to challenge the election result was further complicated when Zambia’s courts were reportedly closed on the final day for filing a legal petition. The development has raised concerns about political freedoms, due process and the treatment of opposition figures.

The United Nations has expressed concern over reported arrests and detentions of political opponents following the election. The concerns have added international scrutiny to Hichilema’s second term and his government’s handling of dissent.

Several African leaders, including presidents from Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Tanzania, were expected to attend the inauguration ceremony in Lusaka.

Hichilema will serve his second term alongside Vice-President Mutale Nalumango. His administration now faces the challenge of maintaining political stability while addressing concerns over the election, opposition rights and the rule of law.
