Veritas University, Abuja, will host the 2026 Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) from the 12th to the 20th of December at its Bwari campus, marking the return of the continental university debating community to Nigeria more than a decade after the country last hosted the event. Professor Armstrong Idachaba, chairman of the Veritas University Senate Committee on PAUDC 2026, announced the dates and theme at a news conference in Abuja on the 23rd of September. The championship, themed “The Republic of Reason: Building Africa’s Future through Debate,” is expected to draw about 1,000 delegates from universities across Africa.
Organisers describe PAUDC 2026 as both a competition and a continental “intellectual homecoming,” designed to strengthen Africa’s debating culture and civic discourse. The event will bring together student debaters, coaches, adjudicators and scholars to compete in debate and public speaking while engaging with issues shaping the continent’s future, including governance, economic development, technology, peace, democracy and identity.
Idachaba said the young people who will inherit responsibility for Africa’s most pressing questions must be able to think critically, interrogate assumptions, listen across disagreement and communicate with clarity. The championship is intended to cultivate those capacities through rigorous argumentation and exposure to diverse perspectives.
The tournament will offer a total prize pool of US$20,000 (about 27 million naira) across major competitive categories. The winning debate team will receive sponsorship to represent Africa at the next World Universities Debating Championship, providing a direct pathway from continental to global competition.
Beyond the main tournament, PAUDC 2026 will feature a Legacy Lab, where participants will co-create actionable solutions to challenges discussed during the championship. Selected projects will receive seed funding of up to $5,000 to support implementation, linking debate outcomes to tangible initiatives on campuses and in communities.
Veritas University has assured its facilities and location make it well suited to host Africa’s premier university debating event.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Josiah Ajiboye Adeyemi and other officials assured that the institution is ready to host the championship, with preparations already underway for accommodation, venues, security and logistics.
For Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, PAUDC 2026 is an opportunity to showcase local talent, strengthen debating clubs and build networks with peers across the continent. For African universities more broadly, the event reinforces debating as a key platform for training future leaders in critical thinking, public reasoning and democratic engagement.
With registration and programme details to be released via the official PAUDC 2026 platform, the championship is set to become one of the most prominent intellectual gatherings on the African academic calendar in 2026.
