On the 30th of June, Norway won a knockout game in the World Cup for the first time, advancing to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday. Antonio Nusa scored with a curling kick for Norway in the 39th minute, before Amad Diallo levelled with a left-footed finish in the penalty box in the 74th minute. Erling Haaland then scored the deciding goal in the 86th minute, finishing from close range after Patrick Berg squared across from the right channel.

For Ivory Coast, the result ends a historic tournament run. This marked Ivory Coast’s inaugural advancement beyond the group stage, making the Round of 32 alone a landmark achievement for the nation. Amad Diallo, the hero of their group stage campaign, gave everything in Dallas, but it was not enough to stop Norway from finding their best football at the right moment.

Haaland had a frustrating afternoon before his decisive contribution, denied repeatedly by the Ivorian defence and goalkeeper. When the chance finally came in the 86th minute, he did not miss. His father was emotional in the stands as Norway and their fans celebrated.

Norway, making their fourth World Cup appearance, will next play five-time champion Brazil in the Round of 16 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It is the stiffest possible test for a side that has now won more knockout matches in a single tournament than in all their previous World Cup history combined.
