The African Union and the World Bank are set to launch “Integrating Africa: From Threads to Hubs”, today on the 28th of August, 2026, an initiative focused on strengthening connections, cooperation and economic integration across the continent.
The programme is expected to highlight how stronger links between African countries can support trade, investment, job creation and sustainable development. It will examine the infrastructure and policies needed to connect communities, businesses and markets more effectively.
A major focus will be improving transport, energy, digital networks and regional value chains. Better connections can reduce the cost of moving goods and people while helping businesses reach customers beyond their national borders.
The initiative also comes as African countries work to advance the African Continental Free Trade Area. The agreement offers an opportunity to build one of the world’s largest single markets, but its success will depend on reliable infrastructure, efficient customs systems and strong cooperation among member states.
“From Threads to Hubs” suggests a shift from isolated national projects to interconnected economic centres. Such hubs could link producers, manufacturers, technology companies and service providers across several countries.
The World Bank’s involvement is expected to bring attention to financing, technical support and investment opportunities. However, African governments and institutions will need to ensure that projects reflect local priorities and deliver measurable benefits to communities.
Integration must also be inclusive. Small businesses, young entrepreneurs, women-led enterprises and rural communities should have access to the networks and opportunities created by continental connectivity.
The launch represents a broader effort to turn Africa’s shared ambitions into practical cooperation. By connecting infrastructure, markets and people, the African Union and the World Bank hope to support a more competitive, resilient and integrated continent.
