The first participant has been vaccinated in a clinical trial of a new Ebola vaccine, marking a key milestone in efforts to expand the tools available to combat future outbreaks of the deadly virus.
The trial, which began this week, is testing a next-generation vaccine candidate designed to offer longer-lasting protection and easier storage than current options. Researchers say the new jab could be particularly valuable in remote areas where cold-chain logistics remain a major challenge.
The first recipient, a healthy adult volunteer, was enrolled at a research centre in Africa and received the initial dose under close medical supervision. Safety and immune response will be monitored over the coming months, with additional participants to follow in phases.
Scientists behind the trial say the vaccine uses a different viral vector platform than existing Ebola vaccines, potentially allowing for broader protection against multiple strains of the virus. Early laboratory studies have shown promising results, but human data is needed to confirm safety and efficacy.
Ebola outbreaks continue to pose a serious threat in parts of Central and West Africa, with the virus causing severe haemorrhagic fever and high fatality rates. While two vaccines have already been licensed for use in outbreak settings, health officials say additional options are needed to improve coverage and response speed.
