French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has arrived in Rabat for a two-day official visit, marking another milestone in the ongoing diplomatic reset between France and Morocco. The trip, which began on July 15th 2026, is Lecornu’s first foreign visit since taking office and underscores the growing strategic partnership between Paris and Rabat.
Accompanied by a delegation of 12 ministers, including Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, Lecornu was welcomed by his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, at the airport in Rabat. The high-level composition of the French delegation reflects the breadth of issues on the agenda, ranging from economic cooperation to security, migration, and defense.
The visit comes against the backdrop of a marked improvement in Franco-Moroccan relations since France’s 2024 decision to back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a move that ended years of diplomatic tension. During the two days of talks, the two sides are expected to sign several bilateral agreements and lay the groundwork for a future state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, during which a comprehensive “treaty of exception” could be formalized.
A key highlight of the visit is the resumption of the Franco-Moroccan High Commission, which had not met since 2019. The commission will focus on strengthening cooperation in priority areas such as energy, defense, and economic development. Both countries have also expressed interest in pursuing joint projects in Africa, leveraging Morocco’s position as a logistics and financial hub for the continent.
Other sensitive issues, including migration and pending judicial cases involving dual nationals, are also on the agenda. The timing of the visit coincides with Rabat’s recent release of Franco-Moroccan journalist Ali Lmrabet, a move seen as a goodwill gesture in the context of the broader rapprochement.
Analysts view Lecornu’s trip as a clear signal that Paris and Rabat are committed to transforming their diplomatic thaw into a deeper, long-term strategic alliance. With both countries seeking to enhance their influence in Africa and address shared security challenges, the reset holds significant implications for regional stability and cooperation.
