CAF Boosts WAFCON Prize Money as Motsepe Shares AFCON 2027 Update 

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the winner’s prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to $2 million, as president Patrice Motsepe unveiled a major financial uplift for the tournament and gave an update on AFCON 2027 planning. The move is part of CAF’s broader push to invest more in women’s football and raise the profile of African competitions.

CAF said the total prize fund for WAFCON has been increased to $5.8 million, with every one of the 16 participating teams guaranteed at least $150,000. The runners-up will receive $750,000, while third place will take home $500,000. Motsepe said the new structure reflects CAF’s commitment to rewarding performance and supporting the growth of women’s football across the continent. 

The latest increase is the third major rise in WAFCON prize money under Motsepe’s leadership, with the winner’s reward having grown from $200,000 when he took office to $1 million, and now to $2 million. CAF says the total payout for participants has risen sharply as part of its wider financial turnaround and increased investment in football.

Motsepe also confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in June and July 2027, dismissing earlier speculation that the tournament could be delayed. The finals will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with  the CAF expected to announce the exact dates in due course. 

The updates come as CAF continues to expand its competitions and increase commercial value across African football. For women’s football in particular, the increased prize money is expected to provide a stronger financial incentive for national teams and reinforce CAF’s efforts to make the game more competitive and sustainable.
