France is strengthening engagement with the newly established African Space Agency as Europe seeks to secure more independent access to space and reduce its reliance on US launch, satellite and communications capabilities.

The agency, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, is expected to feature prominently at the International Space Summit in Paris on September 9th and 10th, 2026, which is being hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. African heads of state and leaders of national space agencies are expected to attend the meeting, aimed at building new partnerships in the fast-growing global space sector.

France has begun developing a formal relationship with the African Space Agency, giving Paris a continent-wide platform for cooperation on satellite data, climate monitoring, communications and space technology. The partnership comes as African countries expand their own programmes: 18 African nations have launched satellites, driven largely by the need for reliable access to environmental, geographic and communications data.

For Europe, the closer Africa relationship forms part of a wider push for strategic autonomy in space. The European Space Agency is considering increasing the launch rate of Ariane 6 and Vega-C rockets amid growing demand for satellite deployment, while European leaders seek to avoid overreliance on external providers for access to orbit.

The Africa-EU Space Partnership Programme, valued at €100 million, already supports shared infrastructure and data cooperation. France’s latest push could accelerate collaboration in areas where satellite services are increasingly essential, including agriculture, climate adaptation, disaster monitoring and connectivity.
