Africa has gained a formal voice in the global conversation on payment security following the admission of Nigerian cybersecurity and compliance technology company Smartcomply, into the PCI ( Payment Card Industry) Security Standards Council, the world’s leading body for payment data security standards, making it one of the first African companies in its category to contribute to the development of the international frameworks that govern how banks, payment processors, merchants, and technology providers protect cardholder data across the globe.
The significance of that admission extends well beyond corporate achievement. Africa’s digital payments ecosystem has long had to adopt global security standards without being directly represented in the conversations that shaped them. Standards developed without African operational realities in mind create compliance burdens that are disproportionately felt across the continent’s diverse regulatory environments, infrastructure conditions, and fraud landscapes. Smartcomply’s participation positions it to bring those realities into the global standards conversation, while translating the Council’s frameworks into actionable compliance for African financial institutions.
PCI SSC Executive Director Gina Gobeyn framed the admission in terms of shared responsibility: “By joining as an Associate Participating Organisation, Smartcomply has the opportunity to play an active part in improving payment security globally by helping drive awareness and adoption of PCI Security Standards.”
The Council membership adds to a series of milestones for Smartcomply in 2026, including its admission as a verified member of the Mastercard Engage Partner Program and its May 2026 registration to operate in the United Kingdom, where its Adhere platform is supporting financial institutions operating across African payment corridors.
A continent that has built world-class fintech infrastructure deserves a seat at the table where the rules governing that infrastructure are written. Smartcomply has just claimed one.
