Port Harcourt is set to host 10,000 runners from Nigeria, West Africa, and East Africa for the Port Harcourt International Marathon on 14 November 2026, marking a significant expansion of the event after a decade of hosting participants primarily from within Nigeria.
The marathon, organised by Port Harcourt To The World, covers a half-marathon distance of 21 kilometres and is themed “Green Race,” combining sport with environmental protection, youth development, education, and economic growth.
Convener Goodluck Azunwena described the event as more than a race, framing it as a catalyst for unity, youth empowerment, tourism promotion, and economic development. “Port Harcourt To The World has spent the last 10 years quietly supporting projects and collaborations aimed at celebrating the resilience, creativity, culture, enterprise and immense potential of the Garden City,” he said. “The next decade will be bolder, more visible and more impactful.”
The marathon supports three UN Sustainable Development Goals: Good Health and Well-being, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action. Ahead of race day, organisers will roll out community fitness programmes, environmental cleanup campaigns, tree planting, and a Green Symposium.
Notable African runners, particularly from East Africa, are expected to participate, with the event turning from a city marathon into a fully international competition.
