Ethiopia’s Health Minister Elected to Lead WHO Africa Committee

Ethiopia’s Minister of Health has been elected chairperson of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for Africa, placing the country at the centre of the continent’s efforts to strengthen public health.

The appointment gives Ethiopia an important role in guiding discussions on healthcare priorities across the region. These include epidemic preparedness, disease surveillance, medicine access, health financing and universal health coverage.

The WHO Regional Committee for Africa brings together health ministers and senior officials from member states to review health challenges and agree on regional strategies. Its chairperson helps coordinate proceedings and support cooperation among participating countries.

Africa continues to face a wide range of health pressures, including infectious disease outbreaks, maternal and child health challenges, non-communicable diseases and shortages of healthcare workers.

The continent also remains heavily dependent on imported medicines, vaccines and medical equipment. Strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing and improving regional supply chains are therefore likely to remain key priorities.

Sustainable health financing will also be central to the committee’s work. African countries need predictable resources to invest in hospitals, laboratories, primary healthcare and emergency response systems.

The chairperson’s role comes at a time when African governments are calling for a stronger voice in global health decision-making. Greater representation could help ensure that international policies and funding reflect the continent’s priorities.

Ethiopia’s leadership is expected to encourage closer collaboration among African countries and development partners. Sharing expertise, data and resources can help governments respond more effectively to health emergencies and improve everyday healthcare delivery.
