Team Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a seventh-place finish on the final medals table, collecting 24 medals across athletics, weightlifting, para-sports, and judo, securing 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze to emerge the highest-ranked African nation at the Games, ahead of South Africa and Kenya.
South Africa finished 11th with 28 medals, including seven gold, while Kenya placed 13th with 12 medals comprising three gold, four silver and five bronze.
Australia topped the medals table with 171 medals, followed by England and Canada. More than 74 nations competed across 10 sports over 11 days, with 630,000 spectators attending events in Glasgow.
The Performances That Defined the Campaign
Athletics produced the most medals for Nigeria. Samuel Ogazi won gold in the men’s 400 metres in 44.25 seconds, becoming the first Nigerian to claim Commonwealth Games gold in the event. Ezekiel Nathaniel won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed gold in the men’s shot put, both first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals for Nigeria in their respective events. Goodness Nwachukwu defended her women’s discus throw title with a world record. Tobi Amusan and Kayinsola Ajayi won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles and men’s 100m respectively, while Temitope Adeshina claimed Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the high jump in over 70 years.
Although Nigeria’s medal tally was lower than at the 2022 Birmingham Games, where the country won 35 medals and 12 gold, finishing as Africa’s number one nation once again underlines the country’s consistent strength across multiple sports.
