The Congo Basin is the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest, home to more than 100 million people and a carbon sink that absorbs billions of tonnes of CO2 every year. Yet despite its global importance, it remains one of the least studied ecosystems on the planet.

Scientists say the lack of data on the basin’s forests, rivers and wildlife is hampering efforts to understand climate change, protect biodiversity and support sustainable development across Central Africa. While the Amazon has thousands of research stations and decades of scientific monitoring, the Congo Basin has only a handful of long-term study sites and limited local research capacity.

The basin spans six countries; Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon and contains around 25% of the world’s tropical forest carbon. It is also home to iconic species such as forest elephants, gorillas and bonobos, many of which are threatened by logging, mining and poaching.

Researchers say the knowledge gap is due to a combination of factors: decades of conflict and instability in the region, limited funding for environmental science, and a historical reliance on foreign-led research that often fails to build local capacity. Many African scientists say they lack the resources, equipment and training needed to conduct long-term field studies.

The consequences are significant. Without accurate data on deforestation rates, carbon stocks and ecosystem health, it is difficult to design effective conservation policies or access international climate finance. It also means that global climate models may be missing critical information about how the basin responds to rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns.

Efforts are underway to change this. New partnerships between African universities, international research institutions and conservation organisations are seeking to expand monitoring networks, train local scientists and improve data sharing. Satellite technology is also helping to fill some gaps, though ground-based observations remain essential.

Scientists say the time to act is now. As global pressure mounts to protect tropical forests and limit climate change, the Congo Basin’s future will depend on whether the world is willing to invest in the knowledge needed to save it.
