Nigerian aquaculture expert Dr. Foluke Omotayo Areola has made history as the first African to lead the World Aquaculture Society, marking a major milestone for Africa’s role in the global aquaculture industry.
Dr. Foluke officially assumed office after being elected president-elect in 2025, becoming the first African and the first African woman to head the international organisation. Her emergence as global president has been widely described as a landmark moment for African representation in an industry that is increasingly important for food security, employment and sustainable development.
Before taking up the top role, Areola served as president of the African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society, where she focused on capacity building and scientific networking across the continent.
